You can't lower World rank until you have World rank 5. So don't try that like the others have suggested. To be honest I was in a similar spot because my focus had always been on lore and the main story than the gameplay amd levelling up. You are in no way beyond saving though. Just face the tougher opponents for a while.
What I meant to say is that the rewards are based on the Host's World Level. So seeing as he's hosting and is a lower WL, you'll get rewards based on that world since that's where you're initiating the event from. If you host, you should get your WL rewards and I think he will get a higher WL reward as well. Only way to find out is to test it.
