The only problem with playing current releases is that if you decide you like the game and want to go back and play it's prequels, you end up playing a lesser and lesser version of the game (gameplay wise) most of the time. play 1 3 and 4 if you want to know the characters without just watching the DMC story summary you can find in the game, DmC is from another universe, but I personally recommend you to play all of them just to see the gameplay progression and get a feel of the characters in a more organic way than just reading the story, it makes it more enjoyable.
Basically "connects" you with other players who're playing the game online. You can see them but you can't really interact, beyond rating their performance at the end. Download it and install it. If you have GeForce it might say "You need to update". just ignore that till whatever they broke gets fixed for DMC5 and use the older driver. Update: So far it seems better. If you wanted to play any, though, you'd go with 1, 3, and 4. DMC2 is a bad game and is basically irrelevant to the story of 5 anyway. If you care about the story I recommend playing 3 and 4 before. If you play for the combat, you should play 1, 3-4 first.
